Kellyville NDIS Home Modification – Safer Access, Greater Independence

Project Location: Kellyville, Sydney NSW
Project Type: NDIS Home Modification
Works: Accessible Ramp, Composite Decking & Stainless Steel Handrails

“Completed NDIS access ramp with composite decking and 316 stainless steel handrails in Kellyville Sydney”

The Challenge

For an NDIS participant in Kellyville, something most people take for granted — getting in and out of the front door — had become difficult.

The existing entrance incorporated steps that made everyday access more challenging and reduced the client's ability to enter and leave the home safely and confidently.

Following an assessment by the client's Occupational Therapist (OT), Freedom Building Construction was engaged to turn the accessibility recommendations into a practical building solution.

From OT Recommendation to Practical Solution

Every accessibility project is different.

Ramp design needs to consider not only the client's mobility requirements, but also the available space, existing building, entrance location, required rise, landings, handrails, surface selection and other site constraints.

For this Kellyville property, FBC constructed a purpose-built access solution incorporating:

  • Purpose-built access ramp
  • Slip-resistant composite decking
  • 316-grade stainless steel handrails
  • Edge and kerb protection
  • Integration with the existing front entrance

The project was constructed in accordance with the Occupational Therapist's recommendations, approved project requirements and relevant provisions of AS 1428 where applicable.

Why These Details Matter

An accessible ramp is more than simply a deck built on a slope.

The gradient, landings, clear access width, handrail arrangement, edge protection and surface all need to be considered as part of the overall accessibility solution.

For this project, slip-resistant composite decking provided a durable and low-maintenance external surface, while 316-grade stainless steel handrails provided strong and durable support suitable for outdoor conditions.

The design also needed to work within the available space beside the existing home while creating practical access to the front entrance.

The Outcome

The completed modification has provided the client with safer, easier and more independent access to their home.

For us, this is the most important part of the project.

Home modifications aren't simply about ramps, rails and building materials. They are about adapting the home to better support the person who lives there.

A well-planned modification can make everyday activities safer, increase confidence and help people maintain greater independence at home.
