FBC installs grab rails in bathrooms, showers, toilets and other suitable areas of the home. We assess the existing wall construction, proposed rail position and site conditions before selecting an appropriate fixing method.

Depending on the installation, this may involve suitable framing, masonry anchors, a specialist fixing system suited to the application, or additional backing. Where provided, OT recommendations inform the proposed rail position and configuration.

Why our price reflects the installation—not just the rail

A grab rail is only as safe as its position and the structure supporting it.

The location recommended by an occupational therapist does not always align with existing wall framing. Moving the rail simply to reach a convenient stud may make it less effective for the person who needs it.

Before installation, we assess the wall construction and select an appropriate fixing method for the prescribed rail position. Depending on the wall, this may involve masonry anchors, fixing into suitable structural framing, an approved load-rated fixing system, or installing additional timber backing.

This assessment—and any work required to create a secure fixing—is why installation prices vary. Straightforward installations with accessible structural support sit at the lower end of our range. Tiled masonry, concealed framing, hollow walls and installations requiring additional backing generally cost more.

Every standard installation includes:

• Assessment of the wall and proposed fixing locations before drilling
• A fixing system selected for the wall construction and rail application
• Installation in the position prescribed by your occupational therapist, where provided
• Installation with reference to applicable requirements of AS 1428.1 and the rail manufacturer’s instructions
• A manual post-installation security check to confirm the rail is firm, stable and shows no visible movement
• Photographs of the completed installation for your records

Where the wall cannot safely support the rail at the required location, we will explain the additional work needed before proceeding. We do not rely on tiles or wall lining alone to support a safety rail.

Our manual security check is a practical installation check—not a certified or measured load test. No load-test certificate or loading figure is provided.

For Support at Home and NDIS-funded work, we can work from your occupational therapist’s prescription and provide an itemized, funder-ready quotation.

Real FBC Project: Shower Grab Rail in Roselands

FBC completed a Support at Home modification in Roselands, Sydney, involving an L-shaped grab rail installed on a tiled shower wall and a stainless steel handrail beside the internal tiled stairs.

The project illustrates two different applications: grab rail support within a shower and handrail support alongside stairs. Each location requires consideration of the proposed position, existing construction and appropriate fixing method.

Grab Rail Installation FAQs

Can you install grab rails on existing tiled walls?

Often, yes. The fixing method depends on the construction behind the tiles, its condition and the proposed rail position. Tiles alone should not be assumed to provide adequate support. Further investigation may be needed where the supporting construction is uncertain.

Does a grab rail have to be fixed into a wall stud?

Not always. Depending on the wall and rail application, suitable options may include framing, masonry anchors, a specialist fixing system or additional backing. An OT-recommended position may not align with a stud, so the installation needs to be assessed before a method is confirmed.

Do I need an Occupational Therapist’s recommendation?

Private homeowners can contact FBC directly. Where a rail is intended to assist with a person’s particular mobility or transfer needs, an OT can help determine its position and configuration. Funded projects may require an OT recommendation or other supporting documentation.

Can you quote from photographs?

Clear photos, the property suburb, the number of rails and any available measurements or OT recommendations can help with initial pricing. A site inspection or further information may be required where the wall construction or installation requirements are unclear.

Why do grab rail installation prices vary?

The cost includes assessing and installing the rail, not just supplying it. Wall construction, tile drilling, fixing requirements, access and any additional backing or repair work can affect the quotation. See the pricing guide above for indicative costs.

Can grab rails form part of Support at Home or NDIS work?

Grab rails may form part of an approved home modification. Eligibility, funding and approval are determined through the relevant provider or funding arrangements. FBC can review the proposed scope, prepare a quotation and complete approved installation work.
