Lindfield Access Ramp Home Modification – Safer Home Access

Project Location: Lindfield, Sydney NSW
Project Type: Accessibility Home Modification
Works: Custom Access Ramp
OT Involvement: Occupational Therapist recommendations incorporated into the project

The Challenge

This Lindfield property presented a challenging access situation. The home sits at a lower level than the street, with the original entrance requiring the client and carer to negotiate multiple sets of stairs.

The steep garden topography and difference in levels meant that creating an alternative access route required careful consideration of the available space, existing site conditions and the client's accessibility requirements.

FBC worked with the client's Occupational Therapist to understand the recommended access requirements and determine how they could be practically implemented on the property.

The Solution

A custom access ramp was developed around the existing site levels, available space and Occupational Therapist recommendations.

The ramp design considered practical factors including the required access route, gradient, width, structural support and connection to the existing home.

Because of the site's significant change in level, the solution needed to work with the existing garden and property layout rather than applying a standard ramp configuration.

FBC then constructed the ramp in accordance with the approved project requirements and Occupational Therapist recommendations, with relevant construction requirements considered where applicable.

Subject to site conditions and Occupational Therapist requirements where applicable.

The Outcome

The completed access ramp provides the client and carer with an alternative to the original stair-only access route and improves the practicality of entering and leaving the home.

This Lindfield project demonstrates why accessibility modifications often require a site-specific approach. The client's needs, existing property, available space and site levels all need to be considered when developing a practical home access solution.

For FBC, working with the Occupational Therapist helped ensure that the recommended accessibility requirements could be translated into a practical construction solution for the existing home.
