Bathroom Modifications We Can Help With
Depending on the existing bathroom and proposed scope, work may include:
- Shower, toilet and bathtub grab rails
- Handheld shower installations and selected tapware upgrades
- Shower access and threshold improvements
- Doorway modifications to improve access
- Suitable floor treatments to improve slip resistance
- Selected bathroom layout changes and more extensive modification work
The appropriate solution depends on the client’s requirements, existing construction and project scope. Some improvements can be completed individually; others require coordinated building, plumbing or waterproofing work.

Working From OT Recommendations
An Occupational Therapist may assess how the person uses the bathroom and recommend changes to support their functional needs.
FBC reviews how those recommendations can be practically implemented. This can include assessing fixing locations, wall construction, available space, doorway access and the implications of proposed changes to existing fixtures.
Where a recommendation raises a construction issue, we can discuss it with the referring professional before confirming the scope. FBC does not replace the Occupational Therapist’s clinical assessment or recommendation role.

Fixing Methods Suited to the Existing Bathroom
A recommended grab rail position may not align with existing wall studs. The fixing method needs to suit the supporting material, its condition, the rail and the intended application.
Depending on the installation, suitable options may include framing, masonry anchors, a specialist fixing system or additional backing. Where concealed construction is uncertain, further investigation may be needed before the installation method is confirmed.

FBC completed a Support at Home modification in Merrylands, Sydney, involving a stainless steel shower grab rail and a Quoss mixer with a handheld shower head set.

Support at Home, NDIS & Private Clients
FBC welcomes enquiries from private homeowners and families, as well as referrals from Occupational Therapists, Support at Home providers, Care Managers and NDIS-related professionals.
For funded projects, please provide any available OT recommendations, provider scope and relevant approval information.
Funding eligibility, available budgets and approval are determined through the applicable funding and provider arrangements. FBC’s role is to assess the construction requirements, prepare a quotation and complete approved works.

How to Arrange a Bathroom Modification
- Send photos and project details. Include the suburb, the requested changes, photographs of the relevant areas and any available OT recommendations.
- FBC reviews the information. We identify construction questions and advise whether measurements, further information or a site inspection are needed.
- Scope and quotation. We prepare the proposed construction scope and quotation based on the available information.
- Approval and scheduling. Once the scope, quotation and necessary approvals are confirmed, the work can be scheduled.
Bathroom Modification FAQs
Do I need a full bathroom renovation?
Not necessarily. Some requirements can be addressed through targeted changes such as grab rails, a handheld shower or suitable tapware. The Merrylands project above is an example of work involving individual bathroom fixtures. Other access needs may require more extensive changes.
Can grab rails be installed in an existing tiled bathroom?
Often, yes, subject to the supporting construction, proposed rail position and suitable fixing options. FBC assesses the installation requirements before confirming the method. Existing tiles alone should not be assumed to provide adequate support.
Do I need an OT report?
Private clients can contact FBC directly to discuss building work. Where the proposed modification relates to an individual’s functional needs, OT advice can help establish suitable positions and arrangements. Funded projects may require an OT assessment or other supporting documentation.
Can you quote from photographs?
Clear photographs and an adequate scope can help with initial assessment and pricing for some straightforward work. Larger modifications or uncertain site conditions may require an inspection before a final quotation.
Can an existing bathroom floor be made more slip resistant?
A suitable surface treatment may be an option for some existing floors. The surface condition, product suitability, preparation and intended use need to be assessed first.

How much do bathroom modifications cost?
The cost depends on the work involved, existing construction, access, materials and associated trades. An individual rail installation has a different scope from changes involving plumbing, waterproofing or bathroom layout. Send FBC the proposed work and photographs for assessment.
